![]() ![]() There is in the story a relatively very small number of inventions to which we don't yet have an analogue (advertisements projected on clouds in the sky being a - particularly undesirable - example). In fact, we have already invented better versions of most of the things mentioned in the story. The way that in 1889 Verne imagined the world of 2889 would be like seems to us today not particularly advanced. Having said this it must be clear why I haven't given the story a lower rating - it is because for the kind of work it is, it just doesn't make sense to compare it to a fully fledged work of fiction, it must be evaluated by other standards. To be certain, the story isn't set out to be anything like a fully fledged work of fiction, or an ambitious or too elaborate picture of the world in 2889 - it is just a hasty sketch, a quick snapshot of a particular view of the future that the author entertained, as if during a short break from doing something else. It must be the first sci-fi story that I found particularly unimpressive. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() I still do not really know where I stand in terms of what extent I would want this culture to be encouraged and advanced. Through the process I also realized that I am also an active participant in advancing culture of technology. I have been thinking about the satirical portray of technology in this book, and like many, I initially felt guilty, scared, appalled by the possibilities of how technology could change the human condition. ![]() This book made me think and ask a lot of questions I did not think I would be asking. What I understood as Anderson’s message through Feed is that technology, which is definitely not an evil in itself should never be prioritized to replace interactions with real people. ![]() If anything, I think this book is more relevant now than it was at the time of its publication, since its portrayal of technology’s infiltration of our lives has become less and less of a window and more and more of a mirror. I can’t really pin it to any one reason but I thought it was also very forced at a few places. I can completely relate to the commenters above who found the invented slang in this book unbearable - it remained annoying, distracting and made it extremely difficult for me to navigate throughout the entire story. ![]() ![]() ![]() We know what happens to Miss Havisham because we have read Great Expectations. We know what happens to Antoinette, because we have read Jane Eyre. Throughout a short but distinctively taut novel, Rhys creates a sense of constant foreboding. Antoinette Cosway’s story is haunting Catherine Havisham’s, as told by Ronald Frame, is not quite. There is one major difference between the two books, however. In writing a prequel to a classic novel, Frame is writing into loaded territory – and the most obvious comparison, in that it is also an attempt to rewrite the story of a famous “mad woman” of nineteenth century literature, is Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea and its lonely, lost heroine Antoinette Cosway. This is the Miss Havisham we meet at the start of Ronald Frame’s telling of the back story of one of Dickens’s most famous broads. For right from day one Catherine is much alone – her mother died giving birth to her, her father works long hours and she is prevented by his ambitions for her from fraternising with much of the town she grows up in. This Catherine Havisham is the proud young daughter of a wealthy brewer, growing up with the “rich aroma of hops” surrounding her as she sits in splendid isolation in her father’s mansion, Satis House. ![]() ![]() Meet Catherine Havisham – no, not that one, the wrath of a Fury propelling her around her the echoing mansion, bride’s lace trailing behind her. ![]() ![]() ![]() And also brewing revenge, which, after twelve years, arrives in the shape of a theatre course at a nearby prison. Instead, after an act of unforeseen treachery, Felix is living in exile in a backwoods hovel, haunted by memories of his beloved lost daughter, Miranda. Now he’s staging a Tempest like no other: not only will it boost his reputation, but it will also heal emotional wounds. ![]() “A marvel of gorgeous yet economical prose, in the service of a story that’s utterly heartbreaking yet pierced by humor, with a plot that retains considerable subtlety even as the original’s back story falls neatly into place.”- The New York Times Book Reviewįelix is at the top of his game as artistic director of the Makeshiweg Theatre Festival. The beloved author of The Handmaid’s Tale reimagines Shakespeare’s final, great play, The Tempest, in a gripping and emotionally rich novel of passion and revenge. ![]() ![]() Sajer's perspective as a German foot soldier makes The Forgotten Soldier a unique war memoir, the book that the Christian Science Monitor said "may well be the book about World War II which has been so long awaited." A work of stunning force, this is an unforgettable reminder of the horrors of war. As the biting cold of the Russian winter sets in, and the tide begins to turn against the Germans, life becomes an endless round of pounding artillery attacks and vicious combat against a relentless and merciless Red Army. Posted to the elite Grosse Deutschland division, with its sadistic instructors who shoot down those who fail to make the grade, he enters a violent and remorseless world where all youthful hope is gradually ground down, and all that matters is the brute will to survive. However, he quickly finds that for the foot soldier the glory of military success hides a much harsher reality of hunger, fatigue, and constant deprivation. ![]() ![]() A graphic account of the horrors of war on the Eastern Front, it perfectly. ![]() When Guy Sajer joins the infantry full of ideals in the summer of 1942, the German army is enjoying unparalleled success in Russia.
